Is black mold in my shower a DIY job?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black speckles growing along the ceiling and in the grout of our master bathroom shower. The room doesn't have a window and the AC vent in there isn't very strong, so it always feels a bit damp. Is this something I need to call a professional cleaner about immediately, or is it okay to handle myself this weekend?

That depends on the extent and the type of mold. In many Dubai bathrooms, the black speckles are surface mold from condensation, which is common in our humid climate, especially in windowless rooms with poor ventilation. For a small, contained area (less than one square meter), a thorough DIY cleaning is often sufficient.

Use a dedicated bathroom mold cleaner, vinegar, or a diluted bleach solution, ensuring the room is well-ventilated during the process. Scrub the grout and ceiling thoroughly. The critical next step is to address the moisture source. Run the bathroom's exhaust fan during and for at least 30 minutes after every shower. If the AC vent is weak, have your building's maintenance check the airflow, as proper ventilation is key to preventing recurrence.

If the mold covers a larger area, has a strong musty odor, has penetrated behind tiles or into the ceiling, or returns quickly after a thorough cleaning, a professional assessment is recommended. They can identify if it's a simple surface issue or a deeper problem within the wall, which is a common issue here due to the constant AC use and humidity. A certified inspector can also perform lab testing to identify the mold species, which determines the appropriate remediation method.
