Is black mold in my shower dangerous for my kids?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's because of this black mold that's spreading along the grout in our master bathroom shower. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it creeping out from behind the shower caddy. The bathroom doesn't have a window, so I'm guessing the ventilation isn't great. Who is the best professional to call for a proper mold remediation here in Dubai, and should I be worried about the health effects for my family?

Based on the description, the black mold growth in your shower grout is a significant concern, especially given the health symptoms in your children. In the UAE's high-humidity climate, bathrooms without windows are prime environments for mold proliferation due to constant condensation from showers and year-round AC use creating temperature differentials. The persistent dampness behind fixtures, like your shower caddy, provides an ideal breeding ground.
The type of mold is crucial. While many black-colored molds are relatively common Cladosporium or Aspergillus species, the presence of Stachybotrys chartarum (often called "toxic black mold") is a more serious health hazard. It produces mycotoxins that can cause chronic respiratory issues, persistent coughing, headaches, and fatigue, particularly in children and immunocompromised individuals. Without professional air and surface sampling, visual identification is impossible. DIY cleaning with bleach is not recommended. It may remove surface discoloration but often fails to address the root hyphae (roots) embedded deep within the porous grout and underlying materials. Furthermore, improper cleaning can aerosolize spores, worsening indoor air quality and potentially spreading the contamination. For your family's health and a permanent solution, a professional inspection and remediation are essential. We must conduct a thorough assessment to identify the mold species and the full extent of the moisture problem. Our certified remediation process at Saniservice involves containment, advanced HEPA filtration to capture airborne spores, and specialized antimicrobial treatment to eliminate the colony at its source, all in compliance with Dubai Municipality's strict health and environmental standards.
