Is black mold in my shower dangerous to clean myself?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold growing in the corner where the ceiling meets the wall above the shower in our Marina apartment. It's been really humid lately, and the smell is getting stronger, especially when the bathroom door is closed. Is this something I need to get a professional to handle immediately, or can I try to clean it myself this weekend?

It depends on the size of the patch and the underlying cause. For a small, surface-level patch (under one square foot), cleaning it yourself can be a safe first step if you take proper precautions. The high humidity in Dubai, especially in coastal areas like Marina, creates a perfect environment for this type of growth due to condensation from showers and air conditioning.

Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Use a dedicated mold cleaner or a solution of white vinegar and water, not bleach, as bleach only removes the surface colour and can push spores into the air. Scrub the area thoroughly and ensure it is completely dry afterwards. Run your bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after showering to reduce moisture.

However, if the mold covers a larger area, has a strong, musty odour, or if it has reappeared after a previous cleaning, the issue is likely inside the wall or ceiling. This indicates a persistent moisture problem, possibly from a hidden leak in the plumbing or from AC condensation drain lines, which is common here. In these cases, DIY cleaning will not address the root cause and can disturb a significant colony, spreading spores.

For recurring or large-scale mold, a professional inspection is recommended to identify and rectify the hidden moisture source. They can also perform air or surface sampling to determine the species, as some types of Stachybotrys (black mold) require more stringent containment during remediation. In Dubai villas and apartments, unresolved moisture often leads to structural damage if not properly addressed.
