Is black mold in my shower grout a DIY fix?« Back to Previous Page
|
The grout between the tiles in my master bathroom shower has been getting darker and darker over the past few months. It’s started to look like these black, speckled patches, and no matter how much I scrub with bleach, it just seems to come back. I'm worried it's black mold, especially with the humidity here. Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger cleaner, or should I just call a professional company to deal with it?

The dark, recurring patches in your shower grout are likely a combination of mildew and possibly mold, a very common issue in Dubai due to the constant high humidity and condensation from showers. While often called "black mold," the specific type can't be identified by color alone.
For a small, surface-level patch, a DIY approach can work. Scrub with a dedicated grout cleaner or a paste of baking soda and water, followed by a diluted hydrogen peroxide spray (3-10%). Avoid excessive bleach, as it can lighten the stain without killing the roots deep in the porous grout and may weaken the grout over time. The key is to improve ventilation; run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower to dry the area completely. If the discoloration returns quickly after a thorough cleaning, covers a large area (more than a square meter), or if the grout is soft or crumbling, the growth is likely pervasive. In these cases, professional assessment is advised. They can determine if the moisture has penetrated behind the tiles and take samples for lab analysis to identify the species, which dictates the correct remediation protocol. This is crucial for effectively resolving a recurring problem and ensuring it hasn't spread to unseen areas. |
