Is black mold in my UAE villa dangerous for kids?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be from the black mold that’s started growing in the corners of our master bathroom. We live in a villa in Jumeirah, and it’s gotten worse since the humidity kicked in last month. I’ve tried wiping it with bleach, but it just comes back a few days later. How dangerous is this specific type of mold for my family’s health, and what’s the proper, lasting way to get rid of it in a UAE villa?

Black mold in a bathroom, often Stachybotrys chartarum or Aspergillus niger in Dubai's climate, can absolutely trigger coughing and respiratory irritation in children. Their developing airways are more sensitive to mold spores, which become airborne during showers or when the AC kicks on. The persistent humidity here, especially in villas, creates a perfect environment for it to thrive and return after surface cleaning.
Bleach only removes the visible discoloration on non-porous surfaces but does not address the root system (hyphae) growing deep into the grout, drywall, or behind the tiles. This is why it consistently reappears. The underlying moisture source fueling the growth must be identified and corrected for a lasting solution. For a proper remediation, start by improving ventilation. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and ensure it vents outside, not into the attic. Wipe down wet surfaces and fix any plumbing leaks immediately. For active growth, a hydrogen peroxide-based cleaner is often more effective than bleach at penetrating porous materials. However, given the recurrence and your children's symptoms, a professional inspection is warranted. They can identify the full extent of the growth, including any hidden moisture within walls from AC condensation or minor leaks, which are common in villas. They will use HEPA-filtered equipment to safely remove the contaminated materials and apply antimicrobial treatments. The final, critical step is always identifying and fixing the moisture source; otherwise, the problem will return. For health reassurance, some companies can also provide air or surface sampling to identify the specific mold type and spore count. |
