Is black mold in our bedroom causing illness?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom in our villa in Jumeirah has felt really damp ever since the weather cooled down in December. I’ve started noticing some black, speckled patches in the corner behind the wardrobe and my husband has been waking up with a stuffy nose and headaches. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed this. Is this black mold and could it be the reason he’s feeling so unwell?

It likely is black mold and it could very well be the cause of your husband's symptoms. The damp feeling and black, speckled patches in the corner are classic signs of a mold problem, and the timing aligns with Dubai's cooler, more humid winter months when condensation often forms on cold walls, especially behind furniture blocking airflow.

The symptoms you describe—stuffy nose and headaches upon waking—are common reactions to mold exposure, particularly in a confined space like a bedroom where you spend hours breathing the air. While not all black molds are the notorious Stachybotrys, many species can produce irritants and allergens that cause these exact issues. The risk is higher for individuals with existing allergies or asthma.

This is a very common issue in Dubai villas due to the high humidity and constant AC use, which creates temperature differentials that lead to condensation on cooler surfaces. The corner behind your wardrobe is a prime location because the furniture insulates the wall, keeping it colder than the rest of the room and inviting moisture buildup.

For a case like this, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can identify the moisture source (often condensation, but sometimes a hidden leak) and the mold species. In Dubai, remediation companies should follow DM and DHA guidelines for containment and removal to prevent spores from spreading to other parts of the house. Do not attempt to clean significant growth yourself with bleach, as this can aerosolize the spores and worsen the problem.

Immediate steps you can take are to pull the wardrobe at least 5 inches away from the wall to improve air circulation, use a dehumidifier in the room, and ensure your AC unit is set to a consistent temperature and its filters are clean. Only a lab analysis of a tape lift or swab sample can confirm the species, which determines the appropriate remediation protocol.
