Is black mold in our bedroom dangerous to our health?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Jumeirah for 2 years and just noticed a big patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet. It must have been growing slowly for ages. My husband has had a constant stuffy nose and a cough he can't shake for the last few months, and I'm starting to worry it's connected. How dangerous is this kind of mold and should we get a professional company in to test it, or just clean it ourselves?

Yes, the presence of black mold (Stachybotrys chartarum is the most concerning species often referred to as "black mold") in your bedroom is a significant health hazard and should be treated with urgency. The symptoms you describe in your husband—a persistent stuffy nose and chronic cough—are classic indicators of mold exposure. Mycotoxins and allergens released by mold colonies can cause these respiratory issues, skin irritation, headaches, and fatigue, particularly in individuals with allergies or compromised immune systems.

The climate in Dubai is a primary catalyst for such growth. Year-round air conditioning creates drastic temperature differentials between cooled rooms and the external environment, leading to severe condensation within wall cavities and behind furniture, especially in closets. This trapped moisture, combined with the region's high humidity, creates an ideal breeding ground for mold.

Attempting to clean a large patch yourself is strongly discouraged. Agitating the colony without proper containment will aerosolize millions of spores and mycotoxins, contaminating your entire home's air supply and potentially exacerbating health problems. Over-the-counter cleaners often fail to address the root moisture issue and cannot remediate spores embedded in porous materials like drywall or wood.

Professional inspection and testing are critical. A certified inspector will conduct air and surface sampling to identify the exact species and concentration, which dictates the remediation protocol. In the UAE, reputable companies like ours adhere to strict IICRC standards for containment, air scrubbing, and removal of affected materials to ensure complete eradication and prevent cross-contamination.

For a villa in Jumeirah with suspected health impacts, this is a serious case requiring immediate professional intervention.
