Is black mold in our bedroom dangerous?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed some black spots growing along the edge of the carpet in our master bedroom in Jumeirah. Since the weather changed, my husband has been waking up with a stuffy nose and itchy eyes every morning, and it's starting to worry me. I tried wiping the spots with vinegar, but they came back after a few days. How dangerous is this kind of mold, and what's the proper way to get it permanently removed?

Based on the symptoms you're describing and the fact that the mold returned after a DIY treatment, this is a situation that requires professional attention. In the UAE's humid climate, particularly with AC units creating condensation, what appears as surface mold on a carpet can often indicate a much larger, hidden problem within the underlay or even the concrete slab below.

The black spots you're seeing could be Stachybotrys chartarum (often called "toxic black mold") or more common species like Cladosporium or Aspergillus. All can produce allergens and mycotoxins that cause the exact symptoms your husband is experiencing—stuffy nose, itchy eyes, and respiratory irritation. For individuals with asthma or weakened immune systems, the health risks are significantly higher.

Vinegar or bleach only addresses the surface visible growth and does not kill the root hyphae embedded deep within the porous carpet fibers. Permanent removal requires a comprehensive approach: identifying and fixing the moisture source (like an AC leak or humidity ingress), isolating the affected area, removing and properly disposing of the contaminated carpet and underlay, and then professionally treating the subfloor with antimicrobial agents.

For your safety and a permanent solution, I strongly recommend a certified mold inspection. Our technicians use moisture meters, thermal imaging, and air quality tests to assess the full extent of the contamination, which is almost always worse than it appears. We follow strict UAE guidelines for remediation to ensure it's done safely and effectively.

Please do not disturb the area further. For a professional assessment, you can call our team at 800-MOLDS or 800-66537, or email us at hello@saniservice.com.
