Is black mold in our bedroom making my kids sick?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold that's started to spread on the ceiling in our master bedroom closet here in our Jumeirah villa. It appeared about a month ago after that really humid week and seems to be getting bigger. How urgent is it to get this professionally removed, and is it safe for us to stay in the house until it's fixed?

Black mold growth following a humid period is a common issue in Dubai villas, and the link to your children's coughing is plausible. The high humidity we experience, combined with air conditioning that can cause condensation in poorly insulated spaces like closets, creates an ideal environment for mold. The spores it releases are a known irritant and can trigger allergic reactions, asthma, and persistent respiratory symptoms like coughing, especially in children.
It is advisable to treat this with urgency. While not all black-colored mold is the infamous Stachybotrys, its presence indicates a persistent moisture problem that will only worsen. For the health of your family, professional inspection and remediation are strongly recommended. They can identify the exact species and the moisture source—often a small leak in the AC drain line or insulation issue behind the wall. It is generally safe to stay in the house, but you should immediately close off the affected closet and avoid disturbing the mold, as this will release more spores into the air. Keep the bedroom well-ventilated and run any dehumidifier functions on your AC unit. Do not attempt to remove it yourself with bleach, as this often fails to address the root cause and can aggravate the problem. A proper remediation will involve containing the area, removing the contaminated materials, and fixing the underlying moisture issue to prevent its return. |
