Is black mold in our closet a DIY or professional job?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed a small patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall. It’s been incredibly humid lately and the musty smell is really strong when I open the closet doors. My wife has been waking up with a stuffy nose and headaches for the past week and we’re starting to get worried. Is this something we need to get professionally cleaned immediately, or can we handle it ourselves with bleach?

Based on your description, this is absolutely a professional job and not a DIY situation. The combination of visible black mold, a strong musty odor, and correlating health symptoms like headaches and nasal congestion are significant red flags. In Dubai's high humidity climate, especially during summer months, interior wall cavities can act as condensation traps when cool AC air meets warm, moist external air, creating a perfect breeding ground for mold.

Attempting to clean it with bleach is strongly discouraged. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and wood, as it only bleaches the surface mold while leaving the root structure intact. More critically, disturbing the mold during DIY cleaning can aerosolize toxic mycotoxins and spores, drastically increasing your wife's exposure and potentially worsening her symptoms.

UAE regulations, particularly from Dubai Municipality, emphasize the importance of professional assessment and remediation to ensure occupant safety and prevent cross-contamination. A certified inspector will use tools like moisture meters and thermal imaging to identify the hidden source of moisture within the wall and conduct air quality testing to determine the spore count and species, which is critical for understanding the health risk.

For a case involving health symptoms and a hidden moisture source, I recommend an immediate professional inspection. Our team at Saniservice is certified to handle such situations safely. We will contain the area, use HEPA filtration to clean the air, and remediate the mold at its source. Please call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an assessment. Your family's health is the priority.
