Is black mold in our Dubai bedroom a health risk?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a large patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an exterior wall. It seems worse since the heavy rains in Al Quoz last month, and my husband has had a persistent cough that won't go away. Is this type of mold in Dubai homes a serious health risk, and should we get a professional test done or just clean it ourselves?

Based on your description, this is a situation that warrants immediate professional attention. The presence of a large patch of black mold on an exterior wall, exacerbated by recent heavy rains and correlated with a persistent cough, strongly indicates a significant moisture issue and a potential health hazard.

The black mold you describe is likely Stachybotrys chartarum or another toxigenic species, which can produce mycotoxins. These are particularly hazardous when airborne spores are inhaled. Your husband's persistent cough is a classic symptom of mold exposure, which can also manifest as chronic fatigue, sinus congestion, headaches, and eye or skin irritation. Individuals with asthma, allergies, or compromised immune systems are at greater risk.

In Dubai's climate, this is a common problem. The combination of high external humidity, especially after rain, and the constant use of air conditioning creates significant temperature differentials. This leads to condensation within wall cavities, particularly on poorly insulated exterior walls—a perfect breeding ground for mold. Simply cleaning the visible patch is a temporary and ineffective solution, as the root cause is hidden moisture within the wall itself.

We strongly advise against DIY cleaning. Disturbing the colony without proper containment and PPE will aerosolize a high concentration of spores throughout your home, potentially worsening health effects. A professional inspection is essential. Our certified inspectors use thermal imaging cameras to identify hidden moisture sources and air sampling to determine the spore count and species, which is critical for assessing the health risk and planning remediation, in line with Dubai Municipality's guidelines for healthy indoor environments.
