Is black mold in shower causing my kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual this past month, and I just realized the grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower is completely black. It's the bathroom we all use every day in our Jumeirah apartment. Could this mold be the reason they're sick, and what's the fastest way to get rid of it properly?

Black mold in shower grout can certainly be a trigger for persistent coughing, especially in children who are more sensitive to airborne spores. The high humidity and condensation from hot showers in Dubai’s climate create an ideal environment for mold growth, even with year-round AC use. The constant exposure each time the shower is used releases these spores into the air, which can irritate the respiratory system.

For a small, superficial area on non-porous tile, a thorough cleaning with a dedicated grout cleaner, white vinegar, or a diluted bleach solution can be effective. The key is to reduce the humidity that allows it to return; run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and regularly wipe down wet surfaces.

However, if the grout is cracked or the discoloration is extensive, the mold may have penetrated deeper behind the tiles where surface cleaning cannot reach. In this case, the growth will continue, and spores will persist in the air. Given the symptoms you’ve described, a professional inspection is warranted to assess the extent. They can use moisture meters and borescopes to check for hidden moisture and mold within the wall cavity, which is a common issue here. A certified company with its own microbiology lab can also take an air sample to quantify the spore count in your bathroom’s air, providing concrete evidence of whether it’s a significant contributor to the coughs. This diagnostic approach is the most reliable way to identify the problem and ensure the remediation method—whether deep cleaning, grout replacement, or more extensive work—actually solves it.
