Is black mold in UAE causing my kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and sneezing non-stop for the past month, and I’m starting to suspect it’s because of the black mold that’s been growing in the corner of our master bathroom. We’re in an older building in Bur Dubai and the bathroom has no window, so it never fully dries out after showers. Is this type of mold especially dangerous in the UAE humidity, and should I take them to a doctor right away?

Black mold in a humid bathroom can definitely cause the symptoms you're describing. The constant dampness in your windowless bathroom creates an ideal environment for mold spores to thrive, and these spores become airborne with daily activity. In Dubai's climate, where we rely heavily on AC, these spores circulate throughout your home, irritating respiratory systems.

While not all black molds are the highly toxic Stachybotrys, any persistent mold colony can trigger allergic reactions, coughing, and congestion, especially in children. The first step is to see a doctor to rule out other causes and confirm if allergies are the issue. Then, address the source: improve bathroom ventilation by running the exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and wiping down wet surfaces. For existing growth, a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover can clean non-porous surfaces.

However, if the mold is widespread, has penetrated grout or drywall, or symptoms persist after cleaning, a professional inspection is recommended. They can identify the species and advise on proper remediation to prevent it from returning, which is crucial in our high-humidity environment.
