Is black mold making my family sick in Jumeirah?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing nonstop for the past month, and we just found a huge patch of black mold behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom in Jumeirah. The wall feels damp to the touch, and I'm terrified it's making us sick. Is it safe to stay in the apartment, or should we get a hotel while this gets handled?

Black mold exposure in a humid climate like Jumeirah can absolutely cause the symptoms you describe, particularly persistent coughing and respiratory irritation in children. The damp wall indicates an active moisture source, which must be addressed immediately.

For your family's health, it is not safe to remain in that room. The continuous release of mold spores into the air you breathe will likely prolong the illness. If the contaminated area is large and confined to one room, relocating within the apartment may be a temporary solution, but a hotel is the safest option until the source is identified and remediated. Do not attempt to remove it yourself, as improper handling will aerosolize a high concentration of spores, worsening the problem.

The priority is a professional inspection to locate the moisture source—often a leaking pipe, condensation from AC ducts inside the wall, or seepage from the building envelope, which is common here. Remediation involves fixing that leak, containing the area, physically removing the contaminated materials, and HEPA vacuuming. A final post-remediation verification test from an independent lab is the only way to confirm the space is safe. For tenants, notify your landlord in writing; they are typically responsible for resolving structural dampness under Dubai rental laws.
