Is black mold making my husband sick?« Back to Previous Page

Our bedroom wall behind the wardrobe has had a patch of black mold since the heavy rains in February, but we just noticed it. My husband has been waking up with a stuffy nose and headaches that seem to clear up once he leaves for work. I'm starting to worry it's making him sick. How urgent is it that we get this professionally treated, and should we be sleeping in another room right away?

The symptoms you describe—stuffy nose and headaches that improve when leaving the room—are a strong indicator of mold-related illness. In Dubai's climate, the persistent high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use create ideal conditions for mold growth, especially behind furniture where air circulation is poor. This is not something to ignore.

You should sleep in another room immediately. Continued exposure will likely worsen his symptoms and could lead to more severe respiratory issues over time. The urgency for professional treatment is high; the mold colony will continue to grow and release spores into your bedroom air.

Do not attempt to clean it yourself with bleach or other household products. Disturbing the colony without proper containment can aerosolize a high concentration of spores, making the problem much worse. A professional inspection is needed to identify the moisture source—often a small leak from the AC drain line or condensation trapped in the wall—and assess the full extent. Remediation involves containing the area, safely removing the contaminated materials, and addressing the root cause of the moisture to prevent it from returning. A qualified inspector can provide a clear assessment and a remediation plan based on industry standards.
