Is black mold making my kids cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual and I just found a few black spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet. We keep it pretty packed with winter clothes and it's on the wall that faces the outside. I'm worried it's mold from the humidity. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or do I need to call a professional inspector to check it out properly?

Based on the symptoms you've described and the visible growth, there is a strong possibility that the black spots are mold and that it is contributing to your children's respiratory irritation. The location you mentioned—a packed closet on an exterior wall—is a classic high-risk area in Dubai. The exterior wall is subject to temperature fluctuations, which can lead to condensation when it meets the warm, humid indoor air. This trapped moisture, combined with the lack of air circulation from the packed clothes and organic material (cotton, wool) for the mold to feed on, creates an ideal environment for proliferation.

While a small, surface-level patch might be addressed with a detergent solution (we do not recommend bleach as it does not kill the roots and can worsen airborne spore dispersal), your situation warrants a professional inspection. The coughing indicates potential exposure to mycotoxins or allergens, and what you see on the surface is often just the "tip of the iceberg." The mold may have penetrated the drywall or substrate behind it.

In the UAE, proper remediation requires specialized equipment like HEPA air scrubbers and negative air containment to prevent cross-contamination, which is not achievable with DIY methods. Our certified inspectors at Saniservice use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to identify the exact moisture source and extent of the infestation, followed by air and surface sampling to identify the species and spore count, which is crucial for determining the correct remediation protocol and for your family's health.

Given the health symptoms and the common severity of such cases here, I strongly recommend a professional assessment. Please call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule a comprehensive inspection.
