Is black mold making my kids sick urgently?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold that's been spreading on the ceiling of our windowless master bathroom in Jumeirah. It's gotten noticeably worse since the humidity kicked in a couple of months ago. I'm worried about their health but my landlord is being slow to respond. How urgent is it to get this professionally treated, and should I be taking my kids to a doctor immediately?

Black mold in a windowless bathroom during Dubai's humid season is a significant health concern, especially for children. The persistent dampness and lack of ventilation create an ideal environment for mold to thrive, and the spores can easily circulate into living spaces through the AC system, irritating the respiratory system.

Your children's coughing is a legitimate reaction. Mold exposure commonly causes symptoms like coughing, wheezing, throat irritation, and worsened allergies or asthma. You should consult a doctor to discuss these symptoms and rule out other potential causes. A medical professional can provide appropriate treatment for their immediate discomfort.

This situation is urgent from a remediation standpoint. Under Dubai's rental laws (Law No. 26 of 2007), landlords are obligated to maintain properties in a habitable condition, which includes addressing structural issues like moisture intrusion and mold growth that affect health. Document the mold with photos and dates, and formally notify your landlord in writing of the health hazard. This creates a necessary paper trail.

Given the spread and the health symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly advised. DIY cleaning often fails to address the hidden moisture source, and disturbing the mold can release a larger cloud of spores. A proper inspection identifies the exact species and the root cause of the moisture—often condensation from cold AC ducts meeting humid air or a leak from above. Remediation should be handled by a company that provides verifiable before-and-after lab data to confirm the environment has been returned to a safe state.
