Is black mold making my wife sick?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a cluster of small black spots spreading from the corner of our master bedroom closet. It's been incredibly humid the last few weeks and that wall feels slightly damp. My wife has been waking up with a stuffy nose and a headache for the past week. How urgent is it that we get this professionally treated, and is it something that could be making her sick?

Based on the symptoms and the conditions you've described, it is highly probable that the black mold growth in your closet is contributing to your wife's illness. The persistent stuffy nose and headaches are classic symptoms of exposure to mold spores, which are mycotoxins and known irritants and allergens.

The dampness on the wall is a critical indicator. In Dubai's high humidity, especially during the summer months and in rooms with year-round AC, condensation forms readily on cooler surfaces. This creates the perfect environment for mold, particularly Stachybotrys chartarum (often referred to as "black mold"), to thrive. AC units that are not regularly serviced can also become mold reservoirs, circulating spores throughout the home.

This situation requires immediate professional attention. Disturbing the mold cluster yourself, even for cleaning, can aerosolize a massive number of spores, drastically increasing inhalation exposure and contaminating other areas of your home. A certified mold inspector will conduct a comprehensive assessment, including moisture mapping to find the source of the dampness (which could be condensation, a hidden leak, or capillary rise) and air quality testing to identify the spore types and concentration levels. This data is crucial for designing an effective remediation plan.

For a confirmed and safe resolution, I strongly recommend you contact a specialist.
