Is black mold making us sick and how to remove it?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a large patch of black mold in the back of the bedroom closet, where we store our winter clothes and suitcases. Since discovering it, my husband and I have both had constant sinus headaches and a dry cough that won't go away. I'm really worried it's making us sick. What's the most effective way to get rid of it for good, and should we hire a professional or is it safe to handle ourselves?

Black mold can certainly cause the symptoms you're describing—persistent sinus headaches and a dry cough are common reactions to mold exposure. The high humidity and constant air conditioning in Dubai create ideal conditions for mold growth, especially in enclosed, poorly ventilated spaces like closets.

For a patch you describe as large, professional remediation is strongly advised. DIY methods often fail to address the root moisture problem and can aerosolize spores, worsening your exposure. Professionals use containment barriers, HEPA filtration, and antimicrobial treatments to safely remove the mold and prevent its return.

The most critical step is identifying and fixing the moisture source. In a closet, it's often condensation from an external wall or a nearby AC unit drain line leak. Simply cleaning the visible mold without solving this will lead to rapid regrowth. Since you've both developed symptoms, a professional inspection can also include air quality testing to identify the mold species and spore concentration, which helps tailor the remediation strategy.

While waiting for professional help, keep the closet door closed to contain spores, and avoid disturbing the area. Improving overall ventilation in the bedroom by running an exhaust fan or a dehumidifier can help reduce ambient humidity.
