Is black mold on closet wall an urgent fix?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the outside wall has developed a patch of black mold about the size of a dinner plate. I first spotted a small spot after the heavy dew a couple of weeks ago, but it's definitely gotten bigger and the room has a damp smell, especially in the mornings. Given the humidity here, is this something I need to get treated like, tomorrow-level urgent, or is it okay to wait until the weekend to call someone?

A patch that size with a growing damp smell warrants prompt attention, not necessarily emergency service tonight. The combination of Dubai's high humidity and the cooling from year-round AC creates ideal conditions for mold to thrive on cold exterior walls, a common issue known as condensation mold.

For a patch that large, a professional inspection is recommended to identify the moisture source—it could be a small leak from a pipe or window sealant failure, not just condensation. They can also confirm the mold type; while many black molds are common allergens, some species like Stachybotrys require more careful handling.

You can manage it until the weekend by increasing ventilation in the room. Run the AC continuously to lower humidity and keep the closet doors open to allow air circulation. Do not attempt to scrub it yourself, as this can aerosolize spores. A reputable remediation company, ideally one with its own microbiology lab for accurate identification, can properly contain the area, remove the affected materials, and apply targeted treatments to prevent recurrence.
