Is black mold on my sofa urgent in Dubai summer?« Back to Previous Page
|
Our apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has felt really humid since the AC was acting up a couple of weeks ago. I just pulled our leather sofa away from the wall to find a patch of fuzzy black mold about the size of my hand on the back of it and on the wall behind. With the summer humidity coming, is this something I need to get professionally treated like, tomorrow, or is a DIY clean with vinegar enough for now?

Based on what you've described, yes, this situation requires urgent professional attention, especially heading into Dubai's peak summer humidity.
That fuzzy black patch on your sofa and wall is a significant red flag. The AC malfunction created a perfect storm of high humidity and stagnant air, allowing mold to establish itself not just on the surface but likely within the wall cavity and upholstery. A DIY vinegar clean is a temporary surface fix at best; it won't address the root moisture problem or the hidden colonization. In our climate, this will absolutely regrow, and likely worse. The combination of leather (organic material) and drywall is a prime food source. What you see is often just the "bloom," with a much larger network of hyphae spreading unseen. For a proper remediation, the wall likely needs to be opened to assess the damage, the moisture source definitively corrected, and all affected materials treated or removed with industrial-grade biocides and HEPA filtration to prevent spore dispersion. Given the scale and the potential health risks (especially respiratory issues) from prolonged exposure, we strongly recommend a certified inspection. Dubai municipalities have strict guidelines for habitability, and a professional report is often needed for building management. Please don't delay.
