Is black mold on my wall an emergency?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of small black spots forming along the bottom edge of the wall in our master bedroom closet, which is on the side facing the Marina. It’s gotten a little worse since the humidity kicked in last month. Is this something I need to get treated immediately, or can it wait until my landlord's handyman is available next week?

Black mold on an interior wall is a health concern that warrants prompt attention, but it's not always a midnight emergency requiring immediate evacuation. The urgency depends on the mold's extent and the occupants' health.

Given your location facing the Marina, the recent humidity spike is a primary cause. This climate creates ideal conditions for mold growth on cooler surfaces, like exterior walls where condensation can form behind furniture or in closets with poor air circulation. The small, spreading spots you describe are a clear sign of an active moisture issue.

For most healthy adults, limited exposure for a week may only cause minor irritation like congestion or worsened allergies. However, if anyone in the home has asthma, a compromised immune system, or chronic respiratory issues, the risk is higher and action should be prioritized.

You can manage it until the handyman arrives by first identifying and stopping the moisture source. Ensure your AC is running consistently on a dry setting to reduce indoor humidity and improve air circulation in the closet by leaving the door ajar and moving any stored items away from the wall. Do not attempt to bleach or scrub it, as this can disturb spores and exacerbate the problem for susceptible individuals.

While the handyman can address the surface growth, a professional inspection is recommended to identify the underlying moisture problem—whether it's interstitial condensation, a minor leak, or inadequate insulation—which is critical to prevent rapid recurrence. For a definitive identification of the mold type, a lab analysis is the only method.
