Is black mold removal a DIY job or need professionals?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's because of the black mold I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom in our Jumeirah villa. It must have been there for a while, hidden by the furniture, and I'm worried it's spread. I have no idea how to handle this or what the cost would be to get professionals in to test and remove it properly. Is this a DIY job or should I definitely hire a company, and what’s a realistic price range for a room this size?

For a hidden growth of black mold behind furniture in a humid climate like Dubai, professional remediation is strongly advised. This is not a typical DIY job because the visible spot is likely just the fruiting body; the root system can penetrate deep into porous building materials like drywall and plaster, which must be properly removed and replaced.
The health concerns you've noted with your children's coughing are a significant reason to avoid disturbing it yourself. Improper handling can aerosolize a massive number of spores, spreading the contamination throughout your home's AC system and significantly worsening indoor air quality. Professionals use engineering controls like negative air pressure and HEPA filtration to contain the work area and protect the rest of the villa. In Dubai, the year-round AC use and high humidity create perfect conditions for such growths, often due to condensation from an AC line in the wall or a slow plumbing leak. A proper remediation includes not just removal but identifying and correcting the original moisture source to prevent immediate recurrence. The cost for a professional assessment and remediation of a single room can vary widely. It depends entirely on the extent of the hidden damage and the materials affected. You should expect to request a detailed, on-site assessment and quote from a certified provider, as prices are based on the scope of work required for proper containment, removal, and moisture correction. |
