Is black mold spreading from my AC in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading on the back of our bedroom wardrobe, which is on the wall facing the sea. The AC unit is right there too and it's been making a gurgling noise for a while. I'm worried it's all connected and the spores are getting blown around the room. What's the first step I should take to get this properly assessed and cleaned?

The black spots behind your wardrobe and the gurgling AC are almost certainly connected. In Dubai's humid climate, AC units are a primary source of condensation. A gurgling noise often indicates a clogged drain line, causing water to back up and create the perfect damp environment for mold to grow inside the unit and on adjacent cold walls.
Your first step is to stop using that AC immediately to prevent it from blowing spores. Do not attempt to clean it yourself, as disturbing the mold can cause a significant release of spores. For a case like this, a professional inspection is essential. They will use a borescope to inspect the inside of the AC unit and the wall cavity for hidden growth and moisture. The inspection should identify the source of the moisture—likely the AC's drain pan or line—and the extent of the contamination. Proper remediation involves fixing the AC fault first, then containing the area to safely remove the mold from both the wall and the AC interior. Since this is your bedroom, ensuring it's done correctly is critical for your health. After remediation, a third-party clearance test can verify the spore count in the room has returned to a normal level. |
