Is black mold under AC dangerous for our newborn?« Back to Previous Page
|
Our bedroom AC unit in our Jumeirah Park villa has been leaking a bit onto the carpet for the last two weeks. I finally pulled back the corner of the carpet today and found a patch of black mold about the size of a dinner plate on the concrete underneath, and the musty smell is really strong. My husband thinks it's not a big deal, but with our newborn sleeping in that room, I'm really worried. How urgently do we need to get a professional to deal with this, and is it safe for us to stay in the house in the meantime?

Black mold under an AC unit, especially with a newborn present, requires immediate professional attention. The strong musty smell indicates active microbial growth, and the constant moisture from the leak creates an ideal environment for it to spread. For infants, exposure to mold spores can cause respiratory irritation, worsen allergies, and is a significant health risk due to their developing immune systems.
Given Dubai's high humidity, this situation will not resolve itself and will only worsen. The mold on the concrete slab has likely penetrated deeper than what's visible. Do not attempt to clean it yourself, as disturbing it will aerosolize a high concentration of spores throughout the room, which is particularly hazardous for your baby. You should arrange for a professional mold inspection and air quality test to identify the species and the full extent of contamination. This is critical for determining the correct remediation protocol. Until a professional can assess, increase ventilation in the room as much as possible and consider temporarily relocating your newborn to a different, well-ventilated part of the house. The priority is to stop the AC leak at its source and have the affected area properly remediated, which includes removing the contaminated carpet and pad and treating the concrete subfloor. |
