Is black mold under carpet urgent or can I bleach it?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our villa in Mirdif has been making us all cough, and I just pulled back the corner of the bedroom carpet and found a bunch of black spots underneath. We had that unexpected heavy dew a couple of weeks ago and the room has felt damp ever since. How urgent is it that we get a professional to deal with this, or can I handle it myself with bleach over the weekend?

Black mold under carpet after high humidity events in Dubai is urgent and requires professional assessment. The dampness you describe suggests moisture has penetrated the carpet underlay and possibly the concrete slab, creating an ideal environment for mold growth deep within materials that surface cleaning cannot reach.

Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like carpet backing and concrete, as it only bleaches the surface color without killing the root structure. Disturbing it yourself also risks releasing a high concentration of spores into your air conditioning system, which then circulates throughout the villa and can exacerbate respiratory issues like coughing.

Given the UAE's high humidity and constant AC use, the underlying moisture problem must be identified and resolved to prevent immediate regrowth. A professional inspection with moisture meters and thermal imaging can locate the source—often condensation from AC ducts in the ceiling or slab penetration from ground moisture. Remediation involves removing the affected carpet and underlay, HEPA vacuuming, and treating the subfloor. For villas, this is best handled by a company with microbiology lab capabilities to identify the mold species and verify the cleanup's effectiveness through post-remediation testing.
