Is black mold under my carpet an emergency?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be our AC. I just pulled back the corner of the carpet in our master bedroom in Jumeirah and found a patch of black mold about the size of a dinner plate, and the wall behind it feels damp. This must have been developing slowly over the winter. Is this something I need to call a remediation company for immediately, or can it wait until the weekend?

Yes, this requires immediate professional attention. The damp wall indicates an active moisture source, likely from a leak or severe condensation, which will continue feeding the mold growth. In Dubai's climate, with high humidity and year-round AC use, these conditions can rapidly worsen.

Do not attempt to clean this yourself. Disturbing the mold without proper containment will release a large number of spores into your home's air, potentially worsening your children's respiratory symptoms. The size and location also suggest it may have spread inside the wall cavity.

For a situation of this scale with a known health impact, a certified remediation company should assess it. They will identify and stop the moisture source, set up containment to prevent cross-contamination, and safely remove the affected materials. The Dubai Municipality has guidelines for proper mold remediation to ensure it is handled effectively.

Until a professional arrives, restrict access to the room, avoid running the AC in that zone if possible to prevent spore circulation, and keep the area undisturbed. The health of your family, particularly with existing coughing, makes this a priority.
