Is black mold under my carpet causing my symptoms?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our Jumeirah Village apartment has been leaking a bit for the last couple of months, and now I'm waking up with a stuffy nose and itchy eyes every single morning. I’ve just pulled back the corner of the bedroom carpet and found some black, fuzzy patches underneath near the wall. Is this definitely mold, and who can I call for a proper inspection to see if it's what's making me feel so unwell?

Black, fuzzy patches under a damp carpet in Dubai are almost certainly mold. Your symptoms—stuffy nose and itchy eyes upon waking—are classic signs of exposure to mold spores, which thrive in the damp, dark conditions created by your AC leak.

The constant humidity and year-round AC use here create perfect conditions for mold when a water source is present. The leak provides that moisture, and the carpet and underlay act as a food source.

While not all black mold is the notorious "toxic black mold" (Stachybotrys), any mold can cause the allergic reactions you're experiencing. A proper inspection is needed to identify the species and the full extent of the growth, which is likely more widespread under the carpet.

You should call a professional mold inspection company, not a general handyman. In the UAE, look for a provider that uses a certified mold inspector and has its own microbiology lab. They should conduct air and surface sampling to identify the spore types and concentrations in your bedroom air compared to the outside. This data is the only way to scientifically confirm if the mold is the source of your symptoms and to guide an effective remediation plan. Avoid companies that offer to both inspect and remediate on the same visit without diagnostic testing, as this is a conflict of interest.

Until the inspection, minimize exposure by avoiding the area and ensuring good ventilation. The leak must be fixed by your landlord or building management first; remediation will fail if the moisture source remains.
