Is black mold under my carpet causing our sickness?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop and complaining of headaches ever since the weather got more humid a few weeks ago. I’ve just pulled back the corner of the carpet in our master bedroom in our Jumeirah villa and found a large patch of black mold underneath. We’ve been sleeping right on top of it. How dangerous is this type of mold and what are the immediate health steps I should take for my family?

Black mold under a carpet in a humid Dubai climate is a significant health concern and is very likely contributing to your family's symptoms. The persistent coughs and headaches are classic signs of mold exposure, especially in children who are more susceptible. High humidity, often worsened by year-round AC use creating condensation, provides the perfect environment for mold to thrive on concrete subfloors.

The immediate health step is to limit exposure. Keep the children out of that room and close the door. Increase ventilation in the home by opening windows when outdoor humidity is lower, typically early morning or evening. Do not attempt to remove it yourself, as disturbing it will release a massive amount of spores into your air.

This situation requires professional inspection and remediation. The visible patch is only the fruiting body; the root structure (mycelium) will have spread much further. A proper assessment involves moisture mapping to find the source of the dampness and air sampling to determine the spore count throughout your home.

In the UAE, remediation companies should follow standards like the IICRC S520. The process involves isolating the area with negative air pressure, physically removing the contaminated materials (carpet, underlay, possibly drywall), and HEPA vacuuming and wiping all surfaces. After remediation, a clearance test from an independent third party is essential to confirm the space is safe. For your family's health, a professional approach is the only recommended course of action.
