Is black mold under rug dangerous for my family?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks, and I'm starting to worry. I just pulled back the big rug in our living room in Jumeirah and found a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold underneath, probably from a slow leak I hadn't noticed. It looks really bad and the room has felt damp lately. Is this the kind of black mold that's seriously dangerous, and should I take my family to a doctor right away to get checked out?

Based on your description, the situation you've described in your Jumeirah home is a serious environmental health concern that requires immediate and professional attention. The presence of a large patch of black, fuzzy mold under a rug, coupled with persistent dampness and your children's non-stop coughing, are significant red flags.

The term "black mold" often refers to Stachybotrys chartarum, a toxigenic species that can produce mycotoxins. Inhalation of these spores and mycotoxins is strongly linked to respiratory distress, chronic coughing, headaches, and fatigue, particularly in children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems. Given that your children have been symptomatic for two weeks, it is highly advisable to consult a physician and inform them of the potential mold exposure. They can assess any health impacts and provide appropriate care.

This scenario is unfortunately common in Dubai due to our high humidity levels and year-round reliance on AC systems. Slow, undetected leaks from AC drain lines or minor plumbing issues can create the perfect damp, dark environment for mold to thrive under rugs, behind walls, and above ceiling tiles. Disturbing the mold by pulling back the rug has likely released a large quantity of spores into your indoor air, exacerbating the problem.

Do not attempt to clean this yourself. Improper remediation can cause a massive release of spores throughout your home. This is a job for certified professionals. We must conduct a thorough inspection to identify the moisture source, perform air and surface sampling to identify the mold species and spore count, and then execute a controlled remediation process following UAE standards for containment and air scrubbing.

For your family's health, I strongly recommend you call our experts immediately at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an emergency inspection and assessment.
