Is black mold urgent for allergies and sleeping safety?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed these black speckles spreading along the bottom corner of the wall in our master bedroom, right behind the wardrobe. I think it might be from a small AC leak we had a while back that we thought was fixed. My wife’s allergies have been terrible this past month and we’re getting worried. How urgent is it that we get a professional to deal with this, and is it safe for us to sleep in that room in the meantime?

That pattern of black speckles behind a wardrobe from a past AC leak is a classic sign of a mold colony, and your wife's worsening allergies are a significant indicator that it's affecting indoor air quality. In Dubai's climate, where we rely on AC for 8-10 months of the year, this creates a continuous cycle of condensation and humidity that mold thrives on.

For sleeping safety, it depends on sensitivity. If her allergy symptoms (congestion, sneezing, itchy eyes) are noticeably worse in that room, it's best to relocate until it's assessed. The urgency for a professional is high, as the visible growth is likely just the surface; the real concern is what's inside the wall cavity from that leak, which requires specialized tools like moisture meters and borescopes to properly evaluate.

A proper inspection will identify the moisture source (the leak may not be fully fixed) and the mold species. While the term "black mold" is alarming, many common black-colored molds are irritants, not toxic, but they can severely aggravate allergies and asthma. Remediation involves fixing the water source, isolating the area, removing contaminated materials, and thorough cleaning—not just wiping the surface, which can release more spores.

For verification, always request a detailed report with before-and-after lab results to confirm the spore count has been returned to safe levels, which is a standard practice for reputable companies here.
