Is black mold urgent for my baby's allergies?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some clothes. It's been incredibly humid lately and I'm worried it's spreading quickly since our youngest has started having allergy symptoms. How urgent is it to get this professionally removed, and is this something I can handle myself first to stop it getting worse before a pro comes?

Yes, black mold is urgent given your baby's allergy symptoms. The high humidity in Dubai, especially during summer, creates ideal conditions for mold to thrive and spread rapidly behind walls or in enclosed spaces like closets. The visible patch is likely just the surface manifestation of a larger colony.

Do not attempt to remove it yourself. Disturbing the colony by wiping or spraying it can release a concentrated cloud of spores into your bedroom's air, significantly worsening your child's allergic reaction and potentially spreading the contamination. Your priority is to contain it until a professional assessment.

Immediately move all clothing and items away from the area. If possible, isolate the closet and keep the bedroom door closed. Run a dehumidifier in the room and ensure your AC is set to a low humidity level; this can help slow further growth by drying the air. These are temporary measures, not a solution.

You need a professional inspection. An expert will use moisture meters and borescopes to find the moisture source—often condensation from an AC duct, a hidden pipe leak, or capillary seepage from the villa's walls—and assess the full extent. Proper remediation involves containing the area, HEPA vacuuming, antimicrobial treatment, and addressing the root moisture problem to prevent recurrence. For a child's health, a science-led approach with verifiable post-remediation testing is critical.
