Is black mold urgent for my coughing kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably from all the humidity. How urgent is it to get a professional mold remediation company out here, or can I handle it myself with bleach and vinegar first?

Black mold can be a serious concern, especially with children experiencing coughing. The urgency depends on the extent of growth and the species, which only a lab test can confirm. In Dubai's high humidity, mold behind furniture is common due to condensation and lack of air circulation.

For a small, isolated patch (less than one square meter), you can attempt to clean it yourself. A solution of distilled white vinegar is often more effective than bleach, which doesn't penetrate porous surfaces. However, if the mold has penetrated the wall or is widespread, DIY methods often spread spores and fail to address the root moisture issue, making the problem recur.

With children affected, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can identify the exact species to assess the health risk, locate the moisture source (like a hidden pipe leak or insulation failure), and contain the area during remediation to prevent spores from spreading to other parts of your home. For verifiable results, ensure the company you hire provides before-and-after lab reports to confirm the environment has been returned to a safe, normal fungal ecology.
