Is black mold urgent for my toddler and us?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some boxes. It’s been humid lately and I’ve been waking up with a stuffy nose and itchy eyes. My husband thinks I’m overreacting, but I’m worried, especially for our toddler who sleeps in the next room. How urgent is it to get this professionally removed, and should we be sleeping in that room tonight?

Any visible black mould in a bedroom, especially with a toddler nearby, warrants immediate attention. Given your symptoms and the humid climate, it is not an overreaction. The combination of high humidity and air-conditioning can create significant condensation in hidden areas, allowing mould to thrive.

You should not sleep in that room tonight. The stuffy nose and itchy eyes are classic signs of mould exposure, and a child's developing respiratory system is more vulnerable. Move to another well-ventilated room while you address the issue.

For a patch discovered behind boxes, the urgency for professional remediation is high. Do not attempt to clean it yourself with bleach, as this can aerosolize spores and worsen your indoor air quality, potentially spreading the problem to the HVAC system. A professional inspection can identify the moisture source—often a small AC condensate leak, plumbing seepage, or external water intrusion—and provide a protocol for safe containment and removal. In Dubai, reputable remediators follow international standards for containment and air scrubbing to prevent cross-contamination.

The first step is to have the mould professionally identified via lab testing to confirm the species, as not all black-coloured mould is the toxic Stachybotrys; however, any persistent mould can cause health issues. Once the moisture source is fixed and the mould is properly remediated, focus on maintaining humidity below 60% with dehumidifiers or properly serviced AC units to prevent recurrence.
