Is black mold urgent if sneezing has started?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some shoes. It's been extra humid lately and I'm worried it's spreading because my husband has started sneezing a lot in the mornings. How urgently do we need to get professional mold removal, or can this wait until next week?

Black mold with active sneezing symptoms should be addressed promptly, especially in Dubai's climate where high indoor humidity can accelerate its spread. The sneezing indicates the mold is already affecting your indoor air quality and health.

Given its location in a closet, the issue is likely a combination of poor air circulation and trapped humidity, possibly from air conditioning condensation or an external wall. The risk is that the visible patch is often just the tip of the iceberg; the growth can extend into the wall or backing material.

For a situation like this, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can use moisture meters and borescopes to assess the full extent behind the wall and identify the moisture source, which is the most critical step. Without fixing the source, the mold will return.

While waiting for assessment, you can improve air circulation in the room by running the AC on dry mode and using a dehumidifier. Avoid disturbing the area yourself, as cleaning it improperly can release a large number of spores into the air and worsen the symptoms. A proper remediation will involve containment, HEPA-filtered air scrubbing, and safe removal of affected materials.
