Is black mold urgent or can it wait?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some storage boxes. It's on the wall that faces the outside of the building, and with the humidity lately, it seems to be getting a bit bigger. My main concern is whether this is something I need to get treated professionally like, tomorrow, or if it's okay to wait until the weekend to deal with it?

Black mold's urgency depends on its size, location, and your household's health. A small patch discovered behind boxes is a common issue in Dubai due to high humidity and condensation on exterior walls. For a patch smaller than a square meter and in a low-traffic area like a closet, it is generally acceptable to wait a few days to address it properly.
However, you should immediately move the storage boxes away from the wall to allow the area to dry and improve air circulation. Do not attempt to scrub it, as this can release a high number of spores into the air. The wall likely has internal condensation, which is the root cause. Given its location on an exterior wall, this points to a thermal bridging or insulation issue, common in UAE construction, where cold indoor air meets the hot outside wall, creating condensation. Simply cleaning the visible mold will not solve the underlying moisture problem, and it will return. For a proper remediation, the affected section of drywall often needs to be removed to access and treat the cavity, then replaced with new, mold-resistant board. A professional inspection can confirm the moisture source and extent of the growth. They can also perform an air quality test to determine if spores have spread to your living space, which is a key factor in assessing risk, especially for households with allergies or asthma. |
