Is black mold urgent to clean myself?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It’s on the wall that faces the outside of the building, and it’s been really humid lately. How urgent is it that I get this professionally cleaned, or can I handle it myself with bleach this weekend?

Black mold's urgency depends on its size and your household's health. For a patch smaller than a square foot, you can often manage it yourself. However, Dubai's high humidity, especially during summer, creates a persistent moisture problem that DIY cleaning rarely solves long-term.
Since the mold is on an exterior wall, the issue is likely condensation from the temperature difference between the air-conditioned room and the hot outside air. Bleach is not recommended; it only removes surface discoloration and can worsen the problem by adding moisture. Instead, use a dedicated fungicidal cleaner or a solution of white vinegar and water. Scrub the area, let it dry completely, and address the moisture source by improving ventilation in the closet. If the patch is larger than a square foot, has a musty odor, or if anyone in your home has asthma, allergies, or a compromised immune system, professional inspection is strongly advised. In the UAE, remediation standards require specialists to contain the area to prevent spores from spreading during cleaning. Professionals will also use moisture meters to identify the exact source of the dampness, which is critical for preventing recurrence. For your own health during cleaning, wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. |
