Is black mold urgent to fix this weekend?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some storage boxes. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and with all the humidity lately, it seems to have gotten bigger. My main worry is how quickly this needs to be dealt with—is this something I need to call a professional for immediately this weekend, or can it wait until next week?

Black mold requires prompt attention, but immediate weekend emergency service isn't typically necessary if you take initial containment steps. In Dubai's high humidity, mold can spread quickly, so addressing it within the next few days is advisable.

Start by isolating the area. Keep the closet door closed and avoid disturbing the mold, as this can release spores into the air. Move the storage boxes away from the wall to allow the area to breathe. The location on an exterior wall suggests it's a cold spot where condensation forms, a common issue here with year-round AC use. Wipe any visible moisture from the wall and use a dehumidifier or your AC's dry mode to lower the indoor humidity below 60%.

For a small patch (less than one square meter), you can clean it yourself with a microfiber cloth and a solution of diluted detergent. Never use bleach, as it doesn't prevent regrowth and can damage porous surfaces. However, since the mold is behind boxes and has been growing, its extent might be larger than visible. Professional inspection is recommended to identify the moisture source—it could be a minor condensation issue or something more significant like a hidden leak.

If the mold returns after cleaning, the underlying moisture problem hasn't been solved, and a professional assessment is needed. They can use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the cause. For extensive growth, or if household members have respiratory conditions, seek professional remediation to ensure it's contained and removed safely.
