Is black mold urgent to remove or clean with bleach?« Back to Previous Page

Our bedroom wall behind the wardrobe has these expanding black splotches that we only noticed when we moved the furniture to clean. It’s been humid for the last couple of months and the AC vent in that corner has been dripping a little. My wife has started waking up with a stuffy nose every morning. How urgent is it to get this professionally removed, and can I just clean it myself with bleach in the meantime?

Black mold growth behind furniture, especially with AC condensation and new allergy symptoms, is a high-priority issue that warrants a professional inspection. The combination of a hidden moisture source and a health symptom makes this urgent.

Do not use bleach. It is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall, as it only bleaches the surface color and does not kill the roots (hyphae) growing within. It can also release harmful fumes and add moisture, worsening the problem. For a temporary measure, you can carefully wipe the area with a dilute vinegar solution to reduce surface spores, but this is not a fix.

In Dubai's climate, year-round AC use creates constant condensation, and high humidity provides the perfect environment for mold to thrive inside wall cavities from a small leak. The symptom of morning congestion is a strong indicator that spores are aerosolizing in the bedroom air.

A professional assessment is critical to identify the exact moisture source—likely the dripping AC drain or a leak in the condensate line—and the extent of hidden growth. Proper remediation involves containing the area, safely removing contaminated porous materials like affected drywall, and HEPA vacuuming, not just surface cleaning. For health safety, especially with existing symptoms, a lab test to identify the mold species can confirm the risk level. Addressing the root cause is the only permanent solution.
