Is black mold urgent to remove or DIY with bleach?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's been really humid lately and my husband has been waking up with a stuffy nose and itchy eyes for the past week. How urgent is it that we get this professionally cleaned, or can we handle it ourselves with bleach?

Black mold in a closet during Dubai's humid season is a health concern that should be addressed promptly. The recent humidity and your husband's symptoms of a stuffy nose and itchy eyes are strong indicators the mold is already affecting indoor air quality.

For a patch smaller than one square meter, a DIY approach can be effective. However, do not use bleach. Bleach is mostly water, which can feed the mold root structure hidden in porous surfaces like drywall, and its fumes are hazardous in enclosed spaces. Instead, use a solution of distilled white vinegar or a dedicated EPA-approved mold cleaner. Scrub the area thoroughly, ensure it is completely dry, and fix the moisture source—often condensation from an exterior wall or lack of airflow.

Given the location in a closet with stored fabrics, which can harbor spores, and the onset of symptoms, a professional inspection is highly recommended. Spores are easily disturbed during cleaning and can spread through your AC system. Professionals use containment procedures and HEPA filtration to prevent this cross-contamination. The humid climate here means the underlying cause is likely persistent, and a pro can identify the exact source, often related to thermal bridging in building walls.

The urgency is moderate to high due to the health symptoms. If symptoms persist after DIY cleaning, or if the mold returns, professional remediation is needed to properly resolve the issue and verify the air quality is safe through post-testing.
