Is black mold urgent to remove this week?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some shoes. It wasn't there during my last deep clean a few months ago, but with the humidity lately, it seems to have appeared. My main worry is how quickly this needs to be handled—is this something I need to call a professional for this week, or can it wait until the weekend?

Black mold's urgency depends on its size, cause, and your household's health. For a small patch (under one square foot) that appeared recently, the risk is typically lower, but it should not be ignored. The immediate priority is identifying and stopping the moisture source.

In Dubai's climate, this is often condensation from an AC unit's cold air hitting a warm wall or a hidden plumbing leak. Check for dampness in that closet corner and feel the wall for temperature differences. Move any stored items away to allow air circulation.

For a small area, you can clean it yourself this weekend using a solution of diluted vinegar or a dedicated mold remover, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. However, if the patch is larger than a square foot, has a strong musty odor, or you see water staining, a professional inspection is recommended to assess the extent behind the walls.

The real urgency is in fixing the moisture problem; otherwise, it will return quickly. If anyone in your home has asthma, allergies, or a compromised immune system, treating it sooner is advisable. For peace of mind, a professional can use moisture meters and borescopes to find the exact cause and confirm it's fully resolved.
