Is black mold urgent to remove this weekend?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold growing in the corner where the shower wall meets the ceiling in our master bathroom. It’s been incredibly humid lately and I’m worried it’s spreading quickly. Is this something I need to get a professional to handle immediately this weekend, or can it wait until I can get to it next week?

Black mold in a bathroom corner is common here due to our high humidity and condensation from showers. The urgency depends on the size and your household's health.

For a patch smaller than one square meter, it can typically wait a week. The immediate step is to reduce moisture. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and wipe down wet walls. Keep the door open to improve air circulation. This will help slow its growth until you can address it.

If the area is larger, has a musty odor, or if anyone in the home has asthma, allergies, or a compromised immune system, a professional assessment is recommended sooner. They can identify if the moisture source is internal (condensation) or something more serious, like a leak from above the ceiling.

In many cases, surface mold from condensation can be cleaned with a solution of diluted vinegar or a dedicated mold remover, wearing a mask and gloves. However, if it returns quickly after cleaning, the underlying humidity issue isn't solved. For persistent or large-scale growth, a professional inspection can identify the root cause and provide a verifiable remediation plan with post-cleanup testing to confirm it's resolved.
