Is black mold urgent to treat afetr kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks and I’ve just discovered what looks like black mold behind their bedroom wardrobe, which is against an exterior wall in our Jumeirah villa. We had that unusual rain last month and the room has felt damp ever since. How urgently do we need to get this professionally treated, and should we be sleeping in another room right away?

Yes, this is urgent. Given the visible mold, recent moisture from the unusual rain, and your children's persistent cough, you should treat this as a high-priority health issue. The damp exterior wall in Jumeirah is a classic breeding ground for mold in Dubai's climate, where trapped humidity from AC cycles and condensation creates ideal conditions.

Move your family to another dry room immediately, especially for sleeping. Continuous exposure to mold spores, particularly from disturbed growth like behind furniture, can significantly irritate the respiratory system and is a common trigger for persistent coughing and allergic reactions in children.

For a case like this, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. The priority is to identify and stop the moisture source—likely water intrusion through the wall from the rains. Simply cleaning the visible mold is a temporary fix if the dampness remains. A proper assessment will use moisture meters to find the extent of the water damage and air sampling to identify the spore types and concentrations in the room.

Remediation should be handled by a certified company that follows IICRC standards for containment and removal to prevent spreading spores throughout your home. They will seal off the area, use HEPA filtration, and safely remove the contaminated materials. Once the source is fixed and the mold is professionally removed, the coughing should subside as the air quality improves.
