Is black mold urgent to treat and move out?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we keep our suitcases. It's been increasingly humid the last few weeks, and my husband has developed a nagging cough that seems worse at night. How urgent is it that we get this professionally treated, and should we be staying somewhere else until it's fixed?

Black mold in a bedroom, combined with a new cough, should be addressed promptly. Given Dubai's high humidity levels, especially during summer and transitional seasons, this environment allows mold to thrive on organic materials like dust, cardboard, and textiles. The proximity to your sleeping area and your husband's symptoms make this more urgent.
You should arrange for a professional inspection. The inspector will assess the extent of growth, identify the moisture source (often condensation from AC ducts in walls or a small leak), and take samples for lab analysis to confirm the species. This is critical, as not all black-colored mold is the highly toxic Stachybotrys, but any mold can cause significant irritation. Whether to move out depends on the inspection's findings. For a small, contained patch, sealing off the room and avoiding the area may be sufficient until remediation. For larger contamination, or if the cough is severe, temporarily relocating, especially at night, is a sensible precaution to reduce exposure. The remediation process itself can disturb spores, so your contractor will advise if vacating during the work is necessary. Focus on controlling humidity immediately. Ensure your AC is running consistently to dehumidify the air, and consider using a standalone dehumidifier in the bedroom. Do not attempt to clean it yourself with bleach, as this can aerosolize spores and worsen the problem without addressing the root moisture issue. |
