Is black mold urgent to treat and safe to sleep near?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading along the corner of our master bedroom wall, right behind the headboard. It’s been getting bigger since the weather got more humid a couple of months ago, and my husband has been waking up with a stuffy nose. How urgent is it that we get this professionally treated, and is it safe to sleep in that room tonight?

Black mold growth behind furniture in a humid climate like Dubai is a legitimate health concern that should be addressed promptly. The high humidity combined with a lack of air circulation creates an ideal environment for mold, and your husband's symptoms are a common reaction.

It is not safe to continue sleeping in that room. The proximity to the mold source, especially for 8+ hours each night, is very likely exacerbating his congestion and could lead to more severe respiratory irritation over time. Move your sleeping arrangements to another, well-ventilated room immediately.

For treatment, this is not a simple wipe-and-spray situation. The visible patch is often just the surface manifestation; the hyphae (root-like structures) can penetrate deep into the drywall or plaster. A professional inspection is urgent to determine the moisture source—it could be a hidden pipe leak, condensation from an AC unit, or moisture wicking from the exterior wall—and assess the full extent of the growth. In Dubai, remediation must address the root cause, or the mold will return quickly.

Professional remediation involves containment of the area to prevent spores from spreading, safe removal of contaminated materials, and application of EPA-approved antimicrobials. After remediation, a post-test by a third-party lab is the only way to verify the spore count has been returned to safe, ambient levels. Do not attempt a significant cleanup yourself, as this can aerosolize a high concentration of spores.
