Is black mold urgent to treat for health?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a small patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet. It’s an interior wall and the room is always cool from the AC, but I’m worried because my husband has started waking up with a stuffy nose. How urgent is it that we get this professionally treated, or can I handle it myself with bleach?

The presence of black mold, especially with accompanying health symptoms like a stuffy nose, should be considered urgent and addressed professionally. While the patch may appear small, it is often merely the visible surface manifestation of a larger colony growing within the wall cavity, particularly on the back of the drywall. This is a common issue in Dubai due to the high ambient humidity and the constant cooling cycle of AC units, which can create significant condensation points within walls and concealed spaces.
Treating it yourself with bleach is strongly discouraged. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and wood, as it only bleaches the surface color without killing the root structure (hyphae) inside the material. Furthermore, improper cleaning can aerosolize the spores, spreading the contamination throughout your bedroom and HVAC system, potentially exacerbating your husband's allergic reactions. Given the health symptom, a professional inspection is critical. Our process involves using thermal imaging and moisture meters to identify the exact moisture source and the full extent of the infestation, which is almost certainly larger than what is visible. Remediation then involves containment of the area, HEPA filtration to capture airborne spores, and the application of UAE-approved biocides by certified technicians to ensure complete eradication and prevent recurrence.
