Is black mold urgent to treat in humid home?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the bottom of the wall behind our sofa in the living room. It's on an interior wall facing the marina, and the room always feels a bit damp. Given the humidity here, how urgently do I need to get a professional to deal with this, or is it something I can clean myself this weekend?

In a humid climate like Dubai, any visible mold growth, especially black spots on an interior wall, should be addressed promptly. The constant high humidity and year-round AC use create ideal conditions for mold to thrive, often due to condensation forming on cooler walls.

You can clean a small patch (less than one square meter) yourself using a solution of diluted detergent or vinegar, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. However, since this is behind furniture where moisture may be trapped within the wall, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to identify and rectify the hidden source of the dampness. The Dubai Municipality has guidelines for indoor air quality, and unresolved mold can lead to property damage and health irritations like persistent coughing or allergy symptoms.

The urgency is high to prevent further spread. A certified inspector can use moisture meters to find the condensation point and recommend remediation, which often involves fixing insulation or addressing AC airflow issues alongside safe mold removal. For any recurring or large-scale growth, professional assessment is the only way to ensure it is resolved completely.
