Is black mold urgent to treat in my apartment?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks and I finally pulled their mattress away from the wall in our Deira apartment to find a bunch of black spots in the corner. It’s been extra humid lately and I’m worried it’s spreading. How urgent is it to get this professionally treated, or can I handle it myself with bleach?

Black mold in a Dubai apartment, especially given the recent high humidity, is a health concern that warrants immediate attention. The persistent coughing in your children is a common reaction to mold spores, which are irritants to the respiratory system. The urgency for professional treatment depends on the extent of the growth behind the wall, which you cannot see.

For a small, visible patch on a hard surface, a DIY approach using a vinegar solution (more effective than bleach on porous surfaces) can be attempted. However, since this is on a wall and the mattress was concealing it, the underlying structure is likely affected. Spores have almost certainly spread into the room's air and dust.

In the UAE's climate, with high humidity and constant AC use, mold can proliferate quickly inside wall cavities where condensation forms. Bleach only removes surface discoloration; it does not address the moisture source or the root structure of the mold. Disturbing it yourself can aerosolize a high concentration of spores, potentially worsening the air quality and your family's symptoms.

A professional inspection is strongly recommended. They will use moisture meters and borescopes to assess the wall's condition without unnecessary demolition. The goal is to identify and rectify the source of the moisture—often a small plumbing leak, capillary action from a slab, or condensation from an AC unit—to prevent immediate recurrence.

For treatment, certified remediators will contain the area, use HEPA filtration to clean the air, and safely remove contaminated materials. They can also provide post-remediation verification to confirm the spore count in the room has returned to a normal level. This is the most reliable way to ensure your apartment is safe, particularly with children present.
