Is black mold urgent with a baby next door?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, right against the outside wall. It started getting bigger after all the heavy dew and humidity last week. My wife’s allergies have been terrible since then, and we’re worried about our baby who sleeps in the room next door.
How urgent is it that we get this professionally treated, and should we be talking to our landlord about this immediately or is it something we can handle ourselves with a bleach solution first?

Yes, the situation you've described is urgent and requires immediate professional attention, especially with a baby in the adjacent room.
The presence of visible black mold, its recent growth linked to high humidity, and the direct correlation with your wife's allergic reactions are three major red flags. This strongly suggests an active moisture issue within the wall cavity, likely from a condensation problem or a hidden leak. Bleach is a superficial and ineffective solution; it may bleach the visible spores but will not address the root moisture problem or kill the hyphae (the root system) growing within the drywall or plaster. The mold will simply return, often stronger. In the UAE, the high humidity acts as a constant catalyst for mold growth. For a baby, whose immune and respiratory systems are still developing, exposure to mycotoxins and mold spores from species like Stachybotrys (often referred to as "black mold") can pose significant health risks, including chronic respiratory issues and exacerbated allergies. You should absolutely contact your landlord immediately. Under typical Dubai rental regulations, the structural integrity of the building and issues arising from it (like leaks) are the landlord's responsibility. A professional inspection is non-negotiable here. We use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to pinpoint the exact source of the moisture behind the wall without destructive investigation first. Do not attempt to handle this yourself.
