Is black mold urgent with a newborn in room?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall. It wasn't there during my last deep clean a few months ago, but with the humidity lately, it's gotten bigger. My main concern is my newborn who sleeps in our room – is this something I need to get treated professionally like, tomorrow, or can it wait until the weekend?

Black mold near a newborn is a significant concern that warrants prompt action, but likely not a midnight emergency if the baby is currently healthy. The urgency is due to an infant's developing respiratory and immune systems, making them more vulnerable to mold spores which can cause congestion, coughing, and worsen allergies.

In Dubai's climate, interior wall mold is almost always a sign of hidden condensation or a slow moisture leak from plumbing or AC drainage within the wall cavity. Simply wiping the visible patch won't solve the underlying issue; it will return. For a newborn's room, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to identify and address the hidden moisture source. They will use moisture meters and borescopes to see inside the wall.

Until you can get it inspected, keep the closet door closed and the room well-ventilated. Run a dehumidifier in the bedroom if you have one, as maintaining humidity below 60% can help slow its growth. Do not attempt to bleach or aggressively scrub it yourself, as this can aerosolize a high concentration of spores.

The treatment involves fixing the moisture problem first, then safely containing and removing the affected materials. A reputable company should provide before-and-after lab testing to verify the spore count in the room has returned to safe levels, which is the only way to confirm the issue is resolved for your peace of mind. You can likely schedule this assessment within the week.
